Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it was originally called was established to remember the ones that lost their lives in the American civil war. Since then it has been a time of rememberance for all those that have lost their lives in service to the country.

It has also come to be a time to remember all that has passed on, frequently demonstrated by decoration of loved one's graves with flowers. I suppose, with it being of such a personal nature, there are many ways individuals and families demonstrate this rememberance. For some it involves traveling to an area infrequently visited, simply to place flowers on the grave of someone they loved. Memorial Day offers some an opportunity to pay tribute to the ones they loved in a manner they were unable to functionally, shortly after their death. Time, while it doesn't heal ALL of the hurt, does make reflection more bearable.

Officially it's to remember our war dead and their sacrifice, our loss of their lives, and the price they paid for our freedom. Seriously, I don't think such attitude and sacrifices are exclusive to the U.S. But today, we remember as a nation.
