I have a friend with an E2D and he was asking me if his light would work with Protected RCR123s like the ones that Lighthound sells. I did some searching but couldn't find the answer, can anyone help?

No! It will fry the bulb at once.

There might be other soultions, but the stock bulb does not work with Li-ions.

Sorry

CPF member fivemega made a run of adapters that allowed the E-series lights to use a Streamlight striton 3v bulb. I have one in my E2e and use it with a protected 17670 for about 45-50 minutes of light, brighter than my stock MN03 bulb. I don't know if fivemega is planning anymore runs. You can always post a WTB here. I got mine secondhand from a CPFer for $28. Best thing I ever did to my E2e.
