Earlier in the week I had some e-commerce get balled up when the e-mail took over seven hours to get delivered. This morning one of the people that work for my ISP asked me if I had noticed a slowdown in e-mail delivery. He said that the problem arose from a tremendous increase in large bandwith spam that hit them this week. The anti-virus and anti-spam software at the ISP got overloaded and choaked. He expects this problem to continue, especially with people trying to hack ISPs. He said the short term solution would be to turn off the anit-virus/anti-spam software, but customers wouldn't like that.

LESSON LEARNED: Expect time delays when using e-mail to buy stuff. For time critical e-commerce, a phone call might be a better alternative.
