I converted my Lowe's Task Force 3AA flashlight into a red-orange light. Instead of buying a new star, I chose to re-use the pre-existing star and removed the old Luxeon I white emitter.

The difference in brightness is less with my eyes. It must be the response curve difference between my eyes and the camera's CCD.

1. Desoldered the emitter

2. Chieseled off the old emitter. The top half of emitter came off. I then, chieseled off the bottom part from the star. Came off beautifully, but the white emitter is ruined for good.

3. Cleaned off the mounting surface, then I Krazy Glued a new emitter.

4. Solder.

The whole housing gets hot and it appears Krazy Glue is working good enough as a thermal compound.

There was a site that described how to remove the emitter from a star, but the star is destroyed in the process. My method preserved the star, but destroyed the emitter. Is there anyway I could salvage both?
