Well this paticular thread all started with this thread but is also, I suppose, related to Darells EV thread

Don't forget the "What do you drive" poll here

I am allowed to rant and rave all I want about Saabs here. When I see something in another thread that reminds me of a Saab, I'll post it here instead of taking other threads off topic. Lets start...

In his "flashlight stories" thread Ken0go said:
However, my wife NEVER teases me about having a flashlight with me all the time after that. She knows without it, we could not have seen anything in the hallway, and what a potential disaster that could have been. Infact, she now REMINDS me to take my light with me when we go places AND she even has her own Surefire 6P-GM with nylon holster in her car.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Well that reminded me that there's a little flashlight pouch on the front of lots of Saabs. That's right. There's a little pocket on the FRONT of the seat. Perfect, I'd say, for a flashlight.

Let the auto discussions begin!
Because I would never want this to become cluttered with I drive I deive I drive, I will start yet another thread which is a poll...of, what do you drive? here

LOCO is more like it.
Say, new Volvos have a little pouch on the front of the seat too. Before I found flashlights, I used it for maps, of all things.

Hey look...for the low low Price of $34,985 Peter Gransee can have a fully decked out Saab 9-3 Arc. I choose "Graphite Green" (It's Eucaliptus green, but what with Saab trying to gain more lovers and all...) but you could also get "Arc AAA Black"

It has all the standard features plus the options I carefully chose...
----------------------------------------
Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan Arc 2.0T 210hp

Options:
Sport Wheel Package 1000
Touring Package - Arc & Vector 1195
Electrically operated glass sunroof 1100
Heated front seats & Headlamp washers 495
Leather upholstery and leather door panel inserts, charcoal 0
Automatic 5-speed transmission 1200
Graphite Green 0

Total 34985.0
-------------------------------

So there you have it. Peter, as soon as Arc takes off, your car is waiting

Ok, I'll talk about my car here.... after all, my wife says I'm good at that.

I drive a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 (called simply ZX2 after the Escort name was dropped in 2001)

The model name broken down means Z etec engine, 2 door, Generation X (great marketing, huh?
rolleyes.gif

Anyways, this vehicle has a base price of $12,600.00 and includes Ford's 2.0 liter Zetec engine sporting Dual Overhead Cams, and 4 valves per cylinder producing 130hp & 129lb/ft torque at the flywheel (not a lot, but just wait). The creation of the ZX2 was basically a response to the Honda / Import tuners out there making 4cyl cars perform closer to the big-brother V8s commonly seen as "sports cars". The 2.0L engine in the ZX2 sends it down the 1/4 mile in approx. 15.8 sec for a 5spd manual, and approx. 16.5 sec in a four spd auto. It's not the fastest car on the block, but its acceleration is comprable to that of the Cavalier Z-24/ Sunfire GT sporting 2.4L DOHC 16v engines with 150hp, and costing up to $5000.00 more. Also, the ONLY model of Honda Civic (the import enthusiast's weapon of choice) that can compete with the ZX2 in terms of acceleration & handling is the Civic Si model available only during certain model years, and sporting 160hp (!) costing nearly if not more than $20,000.00. (!!!) Naturally, this is in part due to the Civic's 1.6 liter engine. The really is no replacement for displacement, and the poor Torque figures of the B16A (Civic Si) engine speak volumes.

Right now I ESTIMATE 145-150 hp at the crank on my car with the modifications I have performed. These include (performance-wise) a K&N high-flow air filter, cut factory air intake w/ 5" inlet, removal of resonators along intake path (noise killers) and an idea first tested by a member of the ZX2.com forums. I have 2 variable resistors installed in my driver's side door that are wired into the signal path between the Intake Air Temperature sensor (AIT), the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT) and the car's Engine Control Unit (ECU... this is the "computer" that controls ignition timing / performance / emissions/ etc.....)

Basically, the ECT & AIT pots allow me to fool my ECU into thinking that something is happening when it isn't. The AIT pot when turned up fools the ECU into thinking it's drawing in colder, denser air than it really it. This results in more fuel being added to the combustion chamber, which naturally, creates more power. The ECT pot on the other hand causes a similar response from the ECU by fooling it into thinking the engine is still cold, when it is not. The advantage to this is that the engine will advance the spark timing, which means more power. There are disadvantages to this too, however. Both of these mods require use of premium fuel (which here in Omaha means 91 octane at most filling stations.) I have best luck avoiding the dreaded "pinging" (spark knock) with 92 octane fuel which is only available at the overpriced Amoco stations around town. Also, the ECT pot prevents the engine's cooling fan from turning on, so watch that temp gauge!!!! (after all, your computer now thinks the engine is COLD)

Of course, with the flashaholic in my blood, no car would be complete without auxilliary lighting. Aside from the 55/65w headlamps, I have factory installed foglamps upgraded from 35w to 50w, along with 4 (YES, 4!!!) 55w bulbs burning in aftermarket fog/spot lamps. (2 spot 2 fog) Of course the factory lamps are activated my remote control as any gadget freak should have.
wink.gif
Also, my stock turn signals have upgraded bulbs as well with a blue filtered coating causing a very unnatural white appearance from 35w (yes you read correctly) high (blinking) filiments. If anyone can post pics, I'll gladly email some.

Ok, I'm done. You lucked out though. I've been known to talk about my car for HOURS at a time.

The fastest "small" car if you will I've seen at work (Besides the Nitros) was a Mazda RX7! Now I don't know what mods that guy was running but that little rotary engine held it's own (Read: Faster, much faster) against the likes of Dodge Viper and Chevy Corvette!

Other surprise! fast vehicle? 89 Dodge Caravan! Not the fastest car on the strip but that thing can, and does, hustle

You can get enormous power from a Wankel Rotary...One of my first cars was a '78 RX-7, and it was fast, but sucked gas like a '77 Cadillac!

I currently have a '95 Ford Probe GT, which hasn't been a bad car, at all...

And also have a 2002 Subaru WRX...Probably one of the fastest cars I've ever driven...Deceptively fast....All Subaru has to do is fix the transmission problems, and it would be perfect...D'oh!!

Rotaries are nice, but run hot. I'd still take one.

My friend had an old Dodge Caravan 4cyl TURBO that hauled. Kinda funny watching him hang with the Mustangs & Camaros.

Yeah, they charge extra for washers now, isn't it sad? I think they may be upgraded washers though...that's what I am assuming.

About the Auto, I agree but if my parents are buying a car the stick just doesn't fly, hence the auto. Also we want the Arc edition and that's the tadeoff you take for getting a car named after a flashlight...

Uh oh Saaby,
now that you've started this thread, I'll never be off the computer. Two of my favorite things combined into one forum. Although I like fast cars, I'm never gotten interested in race cars for some reason, I prefer rally cars and off road vehicles.

Dano,
Is your WRX still stock? Near where I live, there's this shop that specialized in Sub's. I guess a lot of the modders take their cars there to be modified. Last time I was there, I was talking to one of the guys who pointed out a brand new WRX sitting outside. He said it had been dyno'd at about 350 hp at the wheels before the stock drive train exploded. Me, I'm waiting for the 2.5L Turbo to come out next year. That's my dream car. An ultimate "sleeper" wagon

Oh yeah, the new BMW330ci doesn't just come with a flashlight pouch, but it's own flashlight in the glove compartment. Just one of those cheapie flip things, where you flip the head around to turn it on. It also comes with a tool kit on the trunk lid. I wonder what they're trying to tell you. That you'll probably break down in the dark somewhere.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Heheh. Thanks Saaby.

I used to like a girl that liked Saabs. I asked her why and she said they just looked cool. OK, thats real definitive. I guess some people think the dashes and what not look like a jet. Fitting since Saab makes jets.

I would tell her, "tell me about your 'saab-story'".
smile.gif

They make a model called, "Arc"? I guess I shouldn't snub them too much then.

Actually, I like Civics. Cheap, fun to drive and don't need to be babied. I abuse mine to make up for all the bad mojo I accumulated towards cars for all the years I didn't drive a civic.

I admit I also have a secret facination for the small toyota 4x4 (older style) pickup. Sitting in that tight cab and driving it transports you to someplace un-automobile. Of course, owning one would be a luxury since I don't need a truck in a normal week.

Spending on production comes first of course, but if we get ahead, I have been eyeing the 2003 civic hybrid. Fun. I haven't test driven it yet, haven't had the time and I don't want to know how nice it is yet anyways. I looked at it though while I was taking my civic in for its rabie shots. The hybrid has this gaudy shift cover. Other than that, primo.

Actually, I think the automobile is quite evil. A necessary evil of course. The automobile has helped revolutionized this world. But it also rules over us with with a heavy hand. One thing I would like to contribute to before I die is to somehow obsolete the automobile. But before then I would like to make some automobiles (a truck, motorbike and sedan). But other gransee products should come first. Cars are quite an undertaking to manufacture.

But, this is your thread and it's primarily about Saabs. I admit I don't know much about them, so I will just read what you have to say.

old automobile joke: running in front of a car gets you tired and running behind it gets you exhausted.

Peter

(just because I am posting in this 'fun' thread doesn't mean I am goofing off, we got our LS quota for the day and I am taking break, so there)

So you made what? 2 LSes and 1 became a SLS

"One thing I would like to contribute to before I die is to somehow obsolete the automobile."

No no no! My plan in life is to design windshield washer nozzles and door handles and glove compartment latches for the rest of my life (Ok maybe not door handles) and make a nice healthy salary and buy some nice Arc products with it. If you some how do manage to take down the auto industry save a place at Arc Automobile LLC for me will ya?

[qb]Of course! I have a PLW-3 in my seat and a cell phone in the passenger one.
One of these days I'll have to scan in the passenger card. It's setup just like those airplane emergency exit instructions. After all, Saab Automobiles did spin off from the Aircraft company.

In case anyone doesn't believe Saab's actually come with aircraft style safety cards, here's the proof:

And remember - in an emergency, oxygen masks will decend from the overhead compartments, you will find lifejackets under your seats which you inflate like *this*.....and the exits are here, here and here...

Where do the masks come from on a 9-3 or 900 convertable

Just kidding, I know the answer...you seee, you were wrong Chris, in the event of an emergency, the masks in all Saabs deploy from the center console...duh!

We don't really want to get rid of them - just remake them into something that can be sustainable.
