Anyone know where I can get one or is anyone offering them for sale currently?
I had a look around but couldn't find anything.

I have a few of them that I don't need, PM me if interested.

If I may be forgiven for sounding like a complete idiot (not exactly unfamiliar territory), what is a "potted" bulb?

Finding the right potted bulb can be a problem. That is why I purchased the PR>bi-pin socket now offered by FIVEMEGA. I can use any offering now. I change bulbs a bit now because I am going through that experimentation stage of the illness, flashaholism.

Another way to look at it is, the standard bulb in a Maglite is seated in a little silver "pot" that goes into the bulb socket. You will see this referred to as a PR base. There are companies that take bi-pin bulbs ( 2 pins ) and insert them into a similiar "pot" so they fit into a stock Maglite socket. Fivemega now offers, again, a gold PR based (pot) to bi-pin adapter so you can use a bi-pin bulb in a stock Maglite socket. This gives you versitility, as you can go from a bi-pin bulb to a potted bulb very easily. As Northern Lights stated, we are always experimenting, it's an illness without a cure. :grin2:

Thank you very much, gentlemen. How do I order from Fivemega? AW is coming out with a "C" sized Li-ion, so the dream of a 3-C cell mag-based Light Saber has been resurrected. What would you recommend? An 1331, an 1166, or an 1185? Runtime is a consideration. It just needs to be about as bright as a Magcharger in a "C" sized torch.

Order bi-pin socket from fivemegaHERE.

For bulb current draw, look HERE. I believe the 1331 would be your best choice for brightness with good runtime. It's overdriven where as the 1166 is not. But they draw about the same current. The 1185 is much brighter, but at a sacrifice in runtime. Just my opinion, YMMV.

Don't you all find the resitance in the light tower spring far too high for a draw of over 3 Amps?

depending on the set up you're running you might need that resistance - I am using it on a vintage light which connects the battery + directly to the base of the bulb so resistance is non existent in the (+)

I just realised that it is possible to use a piece of braid thru the middle of the spring eliminating most of the resistance.

Eliminating resitance and how bright do you want it?

I see a couple of us have recommended the FM pr to bi-pin socket. It allows the use of the cam focus adjustment too.

check these threads to see how to get the internal resistance down in a Mag.

I use awr's hotrater to do bulb calculations. The 1185 is just under 4 amps, the 5761 is about 5.5 amps.
If you know how to use excell you can add bulb parameters and create additional listings as I did for the 5761:

http://rouse.com/flash/hotrater.xls
http://flashlight-forums.com/index.php?topic=888.0
http://hotlamps.rouse.com/

Why the 1185 when the 5761 is brighter on 7.2 volt supplies? Typical torch lumens, 1185-800 torch lumens on 10.8v, 880 torch lumens on 11.1v whereas the 5761 is 896 torch lumens on 7.1v or 941 torch lumens on 7.2 v. Both are beyond the ROP but the 1185 does not lend itself to a 2 C, maybe a 3 C.

https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/127925&highlight=5761

Is it because it is just not a well known fact?

So, reportedly on CPF the ROP LE in a 2C is the brightest package in that size light, that is until AWs batteries are released then the addition of those batteries and a 5761 bulb will leap about 300 torch-lumens above the existing 2 C size standard. WE HOPE!

There is the C light saber. I use the 5761 in a Mag Charger. I was demonstrating the light last night, got the ooh-ahs I wanted to hear and everybody was "slicing" the air, guess they had the "FORCE" with them! Good luck.
