I have a 2C Lowes TaskForce 3 watt led that has step up voltage circuitry(I think). When I measure current a volatage its around 900mA-1000mA at about 2.25V when measured in series. If I just replace the Luxeon 3 with a Cree XR-E with Cree Xlamp Optics will it burn out the Cree XR-E - heat sinking is decent. at the current voltage that be about 2.1 watts to 2.25 or so, but I know on fresh alkalines it around 1000mA - and how would NiMh help if at all.

Ummm... are you measuring the battery current or the LED current? Since it has a boost converter, those two currents are NOT the same. I would guess that the LED current is considerably less than the battery current. Also, many people have run Crees at an amp without any problem. If you're feeling adventuresome, this would be a good mod to try. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
