I see most mods need a new lense and reflector, I can do that. As for batteries I would like to stay with store bought D's. Is there any other bulb that I can stick in here and keep the 5D's to make this thing brighter than stock. Doesnt matter what type of light im just lookin to make my bedstand mag brighter! Thanks.
Hope I put this in the right forum
Are you sure you want to stick with the 5D form factor? That's a bit bulky for a bedstand flashlight. Of the lights I carry in my truck, the "photon cannon" would probably be the closest to your needs. Starting with a 2D Maglite, do the following:
- Swap out the bulb (and the spare in the tailcap) for 6 cell (not a typo) Mag xenon bulbs.
- Go to the buy/sell/trade forums, and order an 8AA-2D adapter from Modamag.
- Get yourself 8 NiMH AA cells that don't "skate" on the size spec in order to get extra capacity (diameter is critical).
The 8 NiMH cells give you 9.6V (as opposed to 9V for 6 alkalines), for a slight overdrive. They may cost a bit more initially, but they pay for themselves through lower life cycle costs. The result is a slightly overdriven (brighter, without much sacrifice in bulb life) 6 cell flashlight in a 2 cell form factor.
Of course, if you want to keep the 5 cell form factor, you could do this and add 3 "D" dummy cells, use a 12AA-3D adapter, 12 NiMH cells, 14.4 volt bulbs (cordless tool light), and 2 "D" dummies, use 2 8AA-2D adapters, 16 NiMH cells, 18 volt bulbs, and 1 "D" dummy, or one each 8AA-2D and 12AA-3D, 24 NiMH cells, and 24 volt bulbs.
