I was going to use an MR16 halogen to build my first bicycle light (helmet mounted). However, what about using one of those overhead projector bulbs that put out like 75-80 watts? Can they be run on a low voltage such as 14 or 18? I suppose if they can my major problem would be low run time unless I found some really high amp battery

I don't know the voltage rating of the bulbs, but I think that it was 12v at one time. It's likely stamped on the bulb.
The drawbacks I can see are:
1. runtime, that a big bulb
2. cost, expect to pay a premium for a 'projector' bulb
3. heat, such a high watt bulb will create some unmanageable heat issues. expect it to melt plastic parts and cause metal ones to reach scalding temps

The expensive "projector" lamps are the metal halide based ones. The halogen ones, such as an MR16, are dirt cheap.
MR16 lamps generally cost less than $10.

I have a overhead bulb rate 86 volts and 360 watts a little too high for any lighting that would fit on a helmet.
