Laser pointer has two beams coming out of it??

I just bought a new Laser pointer and it starts out with one beam coming out of it and then 3 seconds later, there are two beams coming out of it. Can somone tell me why or what it is doing?

I'm not an expert on this but it looks like a mis aligned optic, probably the colminating lens or one of the crystals is getting warm enough to shift a little. Both these are guesses though. I'd call the seller and RMA it. :candle:

I've heard mode switching can cause some pretty strange effects. Any chance that a change in mode could be responsible for two beams like this?

That does indeed look like mode hopping, which means the laser is unstable. I'd get it replaced.
