My gf brought home this Garrity 3xAAA light.

2 levels, side clickie, (slightly) adjustable beam,
but the CR2 Ion (XR-E) I gave her blows it away.

I unscrewed the top, and what do I see, within easy reach of a soldering iron?

Is swapping in an XR-E here as easy a mod as it looks?

Ring came out easily, and so did the Luxeon star,
which is glued to a metal disk (what passes for a heatsink?)

Some measurements with it running (still with the stock Luxeon)
high: 3.35V 290ma
low: 3.25V 190ma

That's with fresh Alkalines, so it must be regulated at both levels.

All my XR-E's are bare emitters. I recall a posting a while back where someone
soldered an XR-E onto a Luxeon star. Maybe worth a try.

I don't follow your logic.

How can you assume it's regulated by measuring the high and low beam currents?

+1

throw some rechargeables in there, see if the voltage is very close...shouldnt be off more then .15 volts... if not, then its most likely direct drive.... or just run it for 5 mins on hi....then the alkies will drop voltage. if its regulated, u should see less then .15 volt drop. modding it should be fairly simple, is there any added room inside for a regulation circut?

I also measured the voltage.
I would assume that such a low current wound not drop 3 fresh alkalines to 3.35V. Would I be mistaken?
