Tweaking the reflector to clean up the beam could be a useful mod. That's the only thing I'd want to do right now...besides it having better threads. :)

That's exactly what I'm planning. Mcr19XR should provide a very beautiful beam.

In my P1D-CE BLACK I grabbed the threads on the head and with a lot of pressure the bezel threaded off the light engine. Just got mine a week ago. The threads on the head fit real well into the body. The reflector in mine looks to be threaded into the bezel. There are two holes next to the hole for the led I'd say a small needle nose could go in them to spin the reflector out.

Have you tried Snap Ring Pliers instead of Small Needle Nose Pliers
to Dissemble/Reassemble?
They work great! They come in different sizes.
You can get them at Automotive Stores. Even Sears has them.

I opened mine with the help of a vise and wood blocks.
Much easier than the Fenix L series.

nekomane, Nice pictures and method. I use a vise with wood blocks
also. Works well.
You said you use heat. Would that be a heat gun? And how long do you
heat it for? I assume it has thread lock or epoxy on the threads.
I want to play around with my reflector also to try to reduce the dark ring.
You got a pretty good amount reduced by what you did.

I find that snap ring pliers aren't made to handle loads in the twist direction, and often get damaged. Sharpened needle nose pliers are more robust for me, YMMV.

Do you have larger pictures of the pill? My Cree is off-center in the reflector, and I wish to understand what would be involved in moving the emitter where it belongs.

I suppose I can't really call it a defect, so I haven't asked to return it for repair. :ohgeez:

tjz,
I sealed the bezel in a small Ziploc bag and boiled it for about 5 minutes.
You may not even need
to do this as the threads go in the bezel less than 4 turns. YMMV.

After you have the reflector in the position you want it, you will need to secure the pill this time
by applying threadlocker or super glue.

Also, if you back out the pill, it will protrude out more than the stock condition. The position of the
O-ring may not be sufficient for sealing it. I haven't done this yet, but you may be able to fix this by
sanding down the ridges of the pill just enough not to short out the leads.
Anyway, have fun experimenting :)

EngrPaul,
Here you go..

I wouldn't care if the off center LED does not affect the beam drastically and would leave it as it is.

EngrPaul & nekomane, Thank you for taking the time to help me out!
Snap Rings Pliers can bend easy.
I have small needle nose pliers I will try to sharpen and try instead.

Ziploc bag and boil it for about 5 minutes, never would have thought of that.
Much safer than a heat gun as it would be easy to overheat and
ruin it one way or the other.

This Mod looks more complicated than I thought but will see...

nekomane,

Thank you for the additional pictures. It appears to be a losing proposition to try to desolder the emitter with all that thermal epoxy polluting the area.

I guess that they are depending on the circular step down to center the rectangular board. Unfortunately, a corner dimension on a board is not a reliable datum feature.

The result of this poor decision to use a bad datum is this:

One side of the Cree ring is partially under the reflector.
