M1 is brighter for every $... haha...
But Surefires are very nice in their own way too.

I guess anything Cree now should be better than a Lux, talking about LED to LED. For the lights themselves, if you want a no-brainer multilevel light, the U2 is hard to beat.

Quality wise, I've never seen a M1, but most of the time Surefire is top notch (although I've seen my fair share of defective tailcaps and other issues).

The U2 is rated at 100lumens, same as a Surefire L6.

The M1XR-E(which I assume you're refering to) with a Cree XR-E emitter hoses my L6 for output, throw and sidespill, both running fresh CR123 primaries.

The standard M1 with a Luxeon III emitter would be nowhere as bright as either the U2 or L6, but may still out-throw the U2 or L6 due to reflector design.

Answering the question depends on the LuxV used in the SF U2 and the driving level of both lights.
Newer U2's has W-bin's build in (not all perhaps, but some members reported about). Driven at specs, the output behind the lens is 150-192 Lumens.
I don't think that the Cree in the M1 is driven so hard that it will outperforms the LuxV W-bin.
I modded a light with a W-bin and I can say, the LuxV is brighter than a Cree P4-binning.
I measured 1.2A at the driver in case of the Cree and 900mA at the driver in case of the LuxV, both with one 18650 LiIon, sure that's not measured at the ermitter but to give an idea.

Best regards

What's the output out the lense?

That's not definately to say, for that it needs a Lumen-measurement. I would guess about 120 Lumens, compared to my other lights.

That's a picture before the mod, stated Lumens-output by the manufacturer 100 Lumens:

That's after the mod, same settings:

Whooweeee! If the camera didn't add or take away anthing from the photos, I'd say that's a difference of at least 50 lumens. It appears more than twice as bright on my monitor.

Yep, the same impressions in real world.:)
Before the light wasn't really useful but now I use it very often.

This was a very good example how important the kind of Led is.
I liked the light due to it's finish and "build like a tank"-menatlity but the output was weak.
Now it's a great overall light also due to boring the body to fit one 18650 cell.
It gives me runtimes: about 2 hours on high, 4 at medium and 8 at low, with only 1cell.:rock:

Now the output at medium setting is brighter than before at high.:grin2:

Best regards

well, well, well!
i have both... i must say M1 is all the way killing the U2.

runtime on both using LG 18650 2600mAh / high settings:
U2 = 2hrs / reaching after 30mins you cant even hold it because its really hot
M1 = 4hrs / reaching after 30mins oh man, completely cool!

brightness on both high settings:
turn on both the U2 will look like a dull!!! looks pathetic!

what can i say on anodizing, lumapower did a great job on M1

you can easily dismantle the M1 without any problems, exchangeable reflector.

output:
M1 = 2 stage
U2 = 5 stage

price:

U2 = $221 - $279
M1 = $97 you get 2 reflectors + $7 if you want to add 2 stage clicky
