I took some shots down the reflectors of my MiniMagLED and my L2D CE. These show the manufacturing tolerances/patterns of the L2D metal reflector and the MiniMag's silvered plastic one. It could also bring about an answer as to why the Fenix CREE lights have the dark ring.

At what distance did you photograph them? That makes a great difference ya know. All properly made parabolic reflectors will exhibit a donut hole at
close range (say a few inches from the emitter). I suspect that you stuck
the camera right up to the light and photo graphed it right?

Here are some examples of how the distance makes a difference.
Here I took a shot of a quad mag at about 1-2 feet:

Notice how you can't see the yellow phosphor in the emitter on all four?

Well back off to 10 feet and heres what you get (with 10x lens):

Yes, that is correct. I was close, but I was aiming more for the overall surface quality of the Fenix reflector as opposed to the beam pattern. The Fenix pic was taken on Low, and the MiniMag was at its full intensity.

Isn't the mag reflector coated plastic? If so then it was injection moulding and did
not need to be machined.

Yep - these are just observations from which any reader can draw his or her own conclusions.

Hey 4-sevens can you tell us what causes the rings in the new lights.I,m going to get one regaurdless but would like to know. That 135 lumens with 4 stages of brightness is to much to resist.

I found out something tonight EVER so slightly related to this very thread...

A M*gled AA reflector un-modded JUST kissing the metal ring on a Cree gives a very repectable spot/corona/spill beam with no donut holes or dark rings.

(runs outside to check something)

It has a quite respectable amount of throw outside in my quality dark back yard too!

moon - the cree rings are not due to the reflector rings - it is rather
a characteristic of the Cree XRE emiter. There are lots of threads analyzing
it on cpf. One thread analyzes the color shift where the ring shows and indicates
more of a color shift rather than intensity.
