got my L1D just a few days ago and want to share my thoughts compared to the L1T (as I dont remember a similar tread)

Package: nice as usual, also poch and spare tail cap and o-rings included. Light is very nice, all treads and rings lubed, good machining, good treads, Led centered, ...
perfect (as usual)

comparison:
* slightly larger (5 mm) slightly thicker (1 mm), thus barely noticeable but fitting hand much better (and I have small hands)
* directly --> beam looking more on the green side (but the L1T might be a tad on the blue and I am just used to this). L1D alone --> perfect.
* beam --> usual ringy cree beam, whitewall hunters wont appreciate. Hardly to notice in use --> OK
* brightness --> hmmm? L1T is same brightness as L1D on high/turbo? What happened here?
Then I noticed that there was still the 14500 Li-Ion in the L1T. Swapped with a normal NI-Mh --> L1D-CE kicks butt.
* current draw L1D-CE: 0.16/0.85/1.25/1.26 A (low/med/high/turbo)
* special modes SOS and dazzle are quite nice.

Only drawback: 14500 Li-Ion does not fit and (more important) no low levels with it.
High/low on L1T works good with 14500.

best battery: Ni-Mh for L1D, 14500 for L1T

wish for the future:
same model but with current draws: 0.1/0.45/1/1.25 A (real low/med/high/turbo)
PS: would trade a bit of throw for a slightly less focused spot

Yellow,

Do you have any background on the swap-ability of using a L1D
head & tail on an L2T body? I have an L2T and ordered a L1D and
am hoping this is do-able with no damaging impact to the L1D components.
What is your opinion or experience, have you seen this asked previously?
I've looked around and haven't come across a thread in this regard.
The L2D body looks exactly like an L2T body, would there be an issue?

Well, you can get that without any additional spending - and it's pretty easy.

The bezel/reflector part of the head unscrews (use rubber bands or gloves for grip)

- and by unscrewing out that part the light can be refocussed.

As pointed out in another thread this puts the LED slightly BEHIND the reflector and there may be some attendant loss of total light output.

However when I did a side-by-side comparison directly (composite photo) the levels seemed pretty even - well, OK close enough that it may not make any practical difference.

Please see the following posts (linked) for details -

swap-ability
I have read it is not possible few times here, but just tried:
L1D-CE head on both L1T and L2P --> bigger diameter, goes over the body without even touching the treads

@unknown: thnkx, gotta find something to get these parts loose. :)

Just did a more thorough comparison of before and after refocussing the L1Dce -

ReFocussing the Fenix L1D-CE

and from the feedback - this does not work well with any light that has an off-centered LED.

It is pretty well known that focussing any light is dependent on how well centered the light source is -
so this doesn't just apply to the L1Dce.

I thought the 14500 would fit the L1D CE

Does it function as a turbo only with only off and on???

This may take care of my issue!!!

Does the 14500 overdrive the LED too much?

Nope, the modes are still in the same respective place(s) -
but the levels on Low, Medium, High and Turbo all look about the same when the 3.7V Li-Ion rechargeable 14500 is freshly charged.

My current draw measurements show the L1Dce on 14500 seems to be well behaved, and within the Cree specs.

So it does fit, thanks for the clarification unknownvt, did you use a protected or unprotected cell ?

Unprotected - DLG 700mAh

However knowing the lowest operating volytage on the L1Dce is as low as 0.9V - I would seriously suggest using Protected 14500 - as long as they fit.

I did not have a problem fitting a bigger Protected 14500 in the L1T - but I had heard of others who had.

Please see -

Fenix L1T on 3.7V Li-Ion - Whoa!

(the one I used in the L1Dce looks the same as the UNprotected 14500 in the pic in the referenced thread)
