Have you been able to open it up to the point that you can see the star or emitter? I've never taken the Task Light apart. With most lights, Pretty much getting to the star or emitter is the biggest hurdle. As long as you can solder, you should be good to go.

I don't have any measurements on the driver but still, if you replace a 'normal' (ie, not handpicked nice Bin) Lux III with a P4, it should be quite a bit brighter.

On this light, the relevant parts of the head are threaded. Only a moderate amount of force is required to break the thermal epoxy (or whatever it is) to separate the star from the heatsink.

What are the foccus issues with cree leds that I read about now and then?

dts71 - I am very interested in following your lead, as I have the same light and have been thinking of swapping the LuxIII to the SSC. Not sure about the cree with this reflector. From my limited knowledge on the issue the cree needs to be "lifted" so that it sits further into a reflector. I have seen mods for an emitter, but not for the star.
Good luck and please keep us posted. Kirk
