Looking for a 2 x AAA pen-style LED to replace my sad SOS 2 x AAA Mag light to keep in my briefcase in the pen slot.

Don't need too bright, floody is fine. Used to search through vehicles, etc. Just want something better than the Mag.

Are there any good, reasonably price options?

Define reasonably priced! (This is CPF)
I use a Peak Baltic stainless steel 2 x AAA pen-style LED light with a momentary tail switch as my EDC at work. It uses a Luxeon LED running at around a watt or so and is very bright with over an hour runtime on 2 AAA NiMH batteries. Cost is $50 for the Baltic with 1 x AAA body, add $10 for the 2 x AAA body and another $10 for the momentary tail switch. That is the cost for the brass or HA-III black aluminum body. Add another $20 for the stainless steel body. They have 5 options for power output from dimmer long runtime lights to the highest output with lower runtimes. The "super ultra power" that I use is not recommended for alkalines.

Another option is the Peak Fujiyama 3 LED (3 5mm LEDs) for $40 in HA-III black aluminum or $50 for stainless steel complete. It has less output but should be more floody per your desires.

The River Rock 2 AAA sold at Target for $10 is a pretty nice light.

If you do not mind 1xAAA the choice expands quite a bit now Fenix has a pocket clip available for their AAA lights.

EDIT
The wider heads/bodies of the River Rock 2AAA and UK 2AAA may have difficulty sliding into a penslot. I had to fight the elastic pen holder in my portfolio to get my RR in. My minimag 2AAA and ballpoint pens just slide in.
review River Rock 2AAA Note tailcap fatter than body.

The Energizer penlight do not seem too reliable. The_LED_museum have no problem breaking his.

Gerber also has one called the Foreman. Comes with separate LED heads for red, green, blue, and white plus a pouch to hold them all. Don't have one, but I've been tempted.

I'm always amazed at the lack of choices in this area. If you want:

- 2x AAA "pencil" form factor
- Luxeon I or better emitter
- Tail click switch (not momentary)
- Pocket clip
- Bezel-down carry to facilitate one-handed activation
- Nice quality

It basically doesn't exist. Yet there's an obvious need for this. Look at all the service technicians, lab technicians, medical technicians, doctors, nurses, veterinarians, etc who need a "pocket clip" penlight with a clicky switch easily activated by one hand.

They often wear a lab coat so can't easily access a holster -- light must be pencil form factor, with pocket clip.

True some of them need the better color rendition of incandescent, but many could do OK with an LED.

Are there lights in this category I've missed?

The light you are talking about sounds like a Fenix LOD CE with a 2xAAA body, pocket clip, and tailcap clicky. Sounds like it would be a pretty decent light. The problem is fitting a clicky in that small of a form factor. You might only be able to have a tailcap twisty like the streamlight and all the other pen lights.

This is a light Ive always wanted to see too. Garrity just came out with one but its not very bright. Its optical. I took the optical part out of it and put in a small reflector which helped some. Still not near as bright as a inova 2 aaa or a river rock 2 aaa.

Whatever you do, do NOT get the Energizer LED penlight, that thing is as sturdy as jello! I too am looking for a good AA pen light for work.

Eveready and others made incandescent penlights with tail clickies for many years, so I don't see what the obstacle is. The pushbutton was like the one on a retractable ballpoint pen.

It looks to me possible to cut down and re-thread the tail of a 2AAA Minimag to fit on the Fenix L0P CE head. That would make a nice bright penlight albeit with a twisty.
