Meet the PSM Chrominator Destroyer! (big pics)

Some preview pics of the PSM Chrominator Destroyer, a special X501bfx build for PoliceScannerMan... enjoy!

It all started with this...


Tri-bored battery tube, perfect for a 3x17670 series battery holder...


Fitting the 19mm reflectors heightwise into the Mag 2D head is going to a challenge...


Another look, top-down this time with the head itself removed from the light. To the right battery holder and tailcap are visible...


Starting to come together...


Head consists of 4x Seoul P4-USVOI emitters mounted in full-sized McR19 reflectors, which JUST fit heightwise... benefit is a decent hotspot in conjunction with excellent field of view, and gradual falloff of intensity moving outward from the hotspot... bFlex regulation circuit supplies flat output and supports a number of brightness levels, electronic lockout, low battery indicator, plus more...


The backing is a black textured surface reminiscent of a carbon fiber weave... and there's high temp silicone high density foam wrapped around the inner sidewalls of the head...


Emitters powered-up at their lowest level, showing the bond wires leading into the emitter dice and orange peel of the reflectors...


The beam is a good balance of throw and spill, designed to fill an entire area with center-weighted but still wide-angle intense light, while also managing some decent range...


Passes inspection so far!

Pretty slick. Silicone foam ROCKS!

Looks like the same stuff they use on the inside of the escape hatch on the Space Shuttle.

There is one thing though...

Are you sure this is a Chrominator DesTROYer and not a Chrominator Scannimatrix?

Well, actually it's labeled X501bfx because the MINIMUM top-end emitter output should be 501 lumens, and if you got something better than the crummiest USVOI emitters possible, then it ought to be higher... so you guys are both right I guess! :naughty:

I don't completely trust Seoul's specifications so I label my Seoul builds using the minimum possible based on their spec sheet. With Cree and Luxeon builds, I use average output from the spec sheet.

Mac, yes, emitters are wired 2x2.

So why would this be used ? If this inulates heat, it will prevent if from getting to the body and out of the light. But do correct me if I'm wrong...

The heat goes out the back, through the heat sink that the LEDs sit on. The reflectors have no metal to metal contact.

The heat sink is usually thermally coupled to the body with some type of heat sink compound, if I remember right Milky prefers Arctic Silver.

The backing itself simply covers the heat sink.
