Hmmm, yes the Veyron is the fastest production car in the world. But depending on what you consider a "car", then the Veyron may or may not be the fastest car in the world.

The Thrust SSC (SuperSonic Car) has set the world land speed record, actually breaking the sound barrier at 763 mph / 1228 km/h on the Black Rock desert in Nevada. Several teams are working to break the record set by the Thrust SSC.

Here's some info on the Thrust SSC:

And here are some vids:

I don't think I'd ever consider the Thrust SSC an actual "car".. It's more an aircraft with wheels rather than a "car".. :)

You can actually use the Veyron as a daily driver to go down to the supermarket, since it has two seats, and a boot.. I'd like to see you try that in a Thrust SSC..

I think the latest Koenigsegg(sp?) may knock the Veyron off the top as fastest production car.

Thrust wasn't the first 'car' to break the sound barrier. That was done much early by what was essentially a rocket with wheels. The G's were so severe it almost ripped the driver's retinas. The europeans refused to recognize it because they used USAF radar to determine its ground speed.

Here's another 1000+ HP supercar for ya! These guys built one hell of a car.
Download and watch the video available at the lower left of website.

Only 67 mph short of the original record set by the TGV in 1990, or 91 mph short of the new one set last month. Amateurs...

Seriously though, great video and music! Interestingly, the running speed of the new Shanghai maglev, day in and day out, is 430 km/hr, so the average person can experience this kind of speed for themselves in something besides an airplane (where there really little sensation of speed other than at takeoff/landing).

I'd be kicking myself if I spent that kind of money and got that little performance.

I read somewhere (i think it was a small article in Car and Driver a few months ago) that Porsche is planning to make a car that is supposed to compete with the Veyron. It is supposed to have a body shape similar to the Carrera Gt, just with a more powerful engine. Not sure if its true or not, but thats just what i remember.

Ok if its something a little more normal (relatively speaking) you want to compare then consider this. The Veyron has only 1001 hp and takes a whole 10.2 seconds (or so) to do the quarter mile.

What you have in this video is a twin turbo Dodge Viper pushing 1900 HP and it does the quarter mile in 7.99 seconds:

Not to shabby, huh? ;)

if you dropped $1.4million on a production car, do you think it matters what i costs to fix? If you're building a custom, that's one thing. but, its off a showroom floor!

While that is impressive, it's not really a fair comparison. Designing a car for quarter mile performance is completely different than designing a vehicle to handle the road at extremely high top speed. I wouldn't trust the Viper not to fly off the road at ~250MPH, even though it has enough horsepower to reach those speeds in theory. Aerodynamics at those speeds are extremely difficult to account for in design, I suspect that's where most of the money went in developing the Veyron. If I were to own one of the cars though, I'd rather have one with the better acceleration than better top speed -- driving a street car that's designed to drive 4 times the speed limit would just be frustrating as there woudl be no chance to use it unless given permission to use the VW test track like in the video above...

I just looked at the clip. I didn't watch the clip earlier as i had already seen the episode on TV. What this clip misses is the bit after this scene, where it cuts back to the studio and the Clarkson and May talk about the car, and how composed it is as it accelerates to its top speed.

According to their words, the Veyron is not like even the Ferraris and Lambos, which start to get all raucous and rattly and let you know you're pushing the limits of its engineering. Instead the Veyron doesn't just remain calm and composed while you do it, but also has got all the bells and whistles, you expect of a luxury car.

Very impressive.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Otherwise, i probably wouldn't have ever seen this.

Top Gear is no longer available on my Television menu.

I'm well aware of the rich history of Bugatti.

Glad to see that they've still "got it".
