I just picked up some 14670 cells for my U2 after reading a post by AW. I have a newer model that would need to be bored out to accept other rechargeable battery sizes, but these fit right in with plenty of room. They function fine and the beam looks like it is getting enough juice, so I'm wondering what is the reason that so many people prefer the older style with no sleeve or even remove the sleeve from the 2nd gen models? Am I missing something? Thanks!

The ones without a sleeve can run the fatter 18650 cells, for more runtime.

14670... odd cell,
I would think most ppl run 17650s in them.

I use the 18650 battery in my U2 - it was the model with the plastic sleeve, which I removed.

It won't be any more bright, but it does have quite a bit more capacity. The 18650 has 2200 mAH, 17670 has ~1600 mAH, and the 14670 has ~1000 mAH.

oh, ok, i didnt realize that fatter = more run time. would 17650s fit the slimmer tube?

I'm pretty sure people use the 17670. It gets 100 mAH more than the 17650.
