Saw something interesting the other night -

Stage lighting using only LEDs -
LEDs070317.jpg

They looked like discrete 5mm(?) LEDs arranged in Red/Green/Blue matrix -
so by switching and varying the intensity the colors can easily be varied.

Photo showing more details -

I didn't think 5mm LEDs were bright enough to replace the massive and really hot stage lights - but apparently with enough of them, they are -

Stage lit by LEDs only -

Seen those before, the results can be very impressive! Not only do you get smooth colour transitions, the effects can be quite nice too :D

When those things are all strobing away, its great

not that bright, but color change-ely.

wouldnt imagine they are generally used like the picture shows them used, but i guess a small club show isnt that much of a stretch to light in the first place.

cool for a color effect, but as main lights on a big stage for a major show, not so much.

where the freak are the drivers, and how on earth do they control them?

I think the control board is the thing highlighted in the red circle? -

I highly doubt they have the ability for any kind of throw as I see no reflectors in there, nice gimmick though and cute for band lighting. Could be nice for creating skies and cyc lighting due to the infinite color mixing ability...Are there special dimmers for these or what?

They ain't bright enough if you look at the pick those lights are way to low. If they were conventional light you'd cook the performers. At higher heights they won't cut it.

Interesting non-the less.
