My head hurts reading 10's of threads with no clear conclusion.

I'm not looking for the cheapest, nor necessarily the most expensive either, but certainly quality matters.

What's the clear choice for Li-Ion rechargeable AA's and a charger. Do they need to be protected cells?

I would say go with AW's cells, I have not had a problem with them. And I would tell you to get protected just so you do not ruin the battery by over discharging it. Its pretty easy to overdischarge or overcharge a battery if you don't pay really close attention. The protected cell will shut itself off when it reaches its set discharge level. If you light uses batteries all the way down to 1.2v then it will certainly overdischarge an unprotected Li-ion if you are not careful.

I have not ordered directly from him, but I heard he's quick. I order from a distributor he has here in Texas. The website is Lighthound.com.

note: You loose all the lower levels with a 14500 in a L1D-CE
--> the MAIN advantage of the Fenix.

If You only want a high output on/off 14500 Cree/SSC-Led-light, get one of the cheaper Fenix-like clones from dealextreme.com

PS: AWs batts and charger work great here
