Tritium vial cut depth

When cuts or grooves are machined into flashlight bodies for tritium vials, are they typically cut deep enough that the vial drops below the surface of the flashlight body? Or do the vials stick up slightly, above the surface?

its better if the vial is not exposed, the vial itself is made of glass...

I suspected as much. The vials don't work so well if the magic gas is set free...
