how much does the polished "reflector" help the arc aaa?

No need for paint. I polished my AAA Arc reflector using sand paper folded into a small triangle. Then fine-polished with "Semichrome" polish on a Q-tip. I didn't experience any problems with the finish outside of the reflector being worn off.
It's hard to quantify but I think my highly polished reflector is about 5% to 10% brighter on the outer beam. The central beam doesn't seem to be any brighter.

Sorry I let this one go for so long. Do it, you'll like it. I've never really found the "reflector" to make much of a difference, though others seem more impressed. The bit of side-light from the LED will really make GITD paint come alive though. Stick a straw over the LED when you paint it, and be sure to rough up the "reflector" a bit before you paint.
