Default Leef's Smallest "Big Deal" yet, the Leef Safety Magnets

    ANNOUNCING the Leef Safety Magnet.

These magnets are Super Glued in fiberglass or nylon washers, to be used between buttonless cells (e.g. AW's 18650s) or in front of a buttonless cell to contact the (+) terminal in a light. The nonconducting washer prevents the batteries shorting out should the magnet shift sideways. Different cells and heads require different magnet sizes, so there are two different sizes, two magnets each size, per package (the smaller diameter size shown here). That's four total magnets per package.

These were shipped to Lighthound today, so they should be on his shelves in a day or so.

(Hmmm? What's that? Oh, okay.) The virtual lawyer is whispering over my shoulder to say that it is possible for the magnets to come unglued from the washer, which might defeat the insulation feature. Leef guarantees that you'll get four washers and four magnets with each package; nothing more guaranteed. As always with batteries, especially rechargeable Li-Ion batteries, use care!

    Very clever!

Who says you can't wear suspenders *and* a belt?

What are the measurements of the package? How about thickness?

Brilliant! It's ideas like these that have the guys at the Patents Office scratching their heads and asking, "Why didn't I think of that"!

At this point, I've sent the Hound two sizes:

    1) .500" o.d fiber washer, .036" thick with .187" diameter, .125" thick magnet.

    2) .375" o.d. nylon washer, .057" thick with .240" diameter magnet, .090" thick.

There are at least a dozen different magnets in what's probably a usable size range. The trick is finding washers that are a good fit. With each package I included two each of the two sizes, thinking that one or a combo would work in most situations.

If anyone has other suggested sizes, speak up.

    Excellent idea!

I don't know where CPF member AW gets his magnets, but they're the only magnets I've used, where the plating doesn't chip off. If yours are of this same variety, you've got a winning combo.

.038" would be perfect for 18650 SB's, .125" may be too thick...not sure? The idea is great.

TB, I've found ~6 places that sell these nyodymium plated magnets. They're cheap -- I pay ~$.10 each, or less, depending on size and quantity. They're really strong, too. I've fiddled with these magnets for one thing or another for quite awhile and have had no flaking problem, except for when large magnets slam against one another, or where I've used large ones to hold steel being welded and the spatter gets on the magnet.

    Maybe it's just thicker sizes...

I haven't had any of the thinner sizes chip, only the thicker ones.

I'm going to have to get some of these!

As for the chipping, my theory is that the larger magnets have a little bit more flexibility. The presumed rigid coating chips off when the magnets bend slightly.
