Time to retire "Luxeon Lottery" and find the right term for today's LEDs

That was and still is a great descriptive term, but in this era of Crees, Seouls and future emitters it's time for a new term that describes the tint inconsistancies Flashaholics will still have to contend with.

I propose:

Cree Crapshoot

What do you think? What about your ideas for a new expression?

With the Crees, I am not really sure that we even need a term -- amongst my small sampling of maybe 5 or 6 Cree lights, I haven't seen any really gnarly tints or anything really undesirable besides being tinted somewhat bluish.

Well some around here are holding onto hope that the new Luxeon Emitter coming down the pipe will put Luxeon back on the map. So I doubt its time to retire "luxeon lottery."
I haven't had a (as Craig from the LED museum calls it) rotten octopus urine green from a cree light yet either. Though we do need to keep an eye out for those angry blue seouls!

I think since 'Luxeon' were the first high power LEDs, the name should remain the same. (but then, I've never liked change.)

When I first found out about Crees and Seouls (at the beginning of this year) it was the Seoul that was garnering the abuse for colour variation. (And they still have huge colour variation if overdriven. Angry Blue anyone?) So which company's products will we dis this week?

Crees are often fine but both of my Fenix P3D-CEs have such severely blue/purplish tints that they impose that color on everything, not just white walls.

Because of this I have stopped carrying them. In this case "Cree Crapshoot" definitely applies.

Actually, Tint Lottery isn't too bad, and applies to all white LEDs (incl 5mm).

I see your point re: the manufacturer's names, but I've been around long enough to remember how bad the tints were on nice ARC lights from 3 or 4 years ago... those were choice bins. I've had about 15 Cree or SSC lights and about 8 raw LEDs and I've yet to see one that truly didn't satisfy me.

I think we are spoiled these days.

Do you mean that like it's a term that references a brand, but isn't necessarily about that brand anymore, or that the lux lottery is just lying around the floor in crumpled up wads?

There is way more variation to LEDs than just tint including Vf, Lumen output, die height, etc. So "LED Lottery" hopefuly covers it all.
