I think it has to be at least a boost to get the voltage high enough for the LuxIII emitter. I have a black E1e that I want to start modding tomorrow. I have a GD 500 board I was going to use for it, but if a SSC P4 modded TLE-5 will work in there, then I'll use that and stick the GD500 in my L1....
