Output Modes on Fenix P3Ds

I just purchased a new FENIX P2D-CE and it worked as advertised for a few days. Then I decided to take it on vacation. I'm using rechargeable batteries (purchased through DealExtreme) and I can't get the light to function correctly in the lower light modes. It clicks through the modes seemingly, correctly going into strobe or SOS; however, the brightness doesn't seem to vary on any of the other modes. I don't have a spare 3-volt battery I can try, but I'm wondering if the 3.6-volt output has anything to do with it. All output modes seem to be either maximum or high.

Does this sound reasonable or does it sound like a bum light?

Thanks!

Just to confirm... You are typing about P2D's and not P3D's as your title suggests.

Yup the P2D only works on turbo and strobe mode with 3.7V 16340 cells.
The P3D works fine with all modes on 2x 3.7V 16340 cells tho.

Yes, it is the P2D I was referencing. I put in a Sanyo GE 3.0 volt and it works fine. This raises a question of how the runtimes in the various modes are affected. Does the P2D reach a certain volt level and then revert? Or are runtimes identical on all modes?

Thanks.
