Green and black grunge on the threads of my my P1DCE

The P1D CE when opened had all green and black grunge around the thread
and also on the lamp contact to the point where it needed to be
thoroughly cleaned with some effort before it would operate. I should
have taken a photo before I cleaned it but the rag (size of a tissue was
pretty dirty afterwards).

This leads me to the question as to whether this was a demo or used unit
as the green oxide on the thread and head looked like a battery leak as
it would not come off easily - had to use a citrus based cleaner to get
it all off.

Anybody had this experience?

My original P1 had the exact same problem.

I think that gunk is left over from the machining of the threads. It also could be some form of factory lube, without a picture its hard to tell.

Mine Fenix was ok but I have had other lights with the same Gunk

Also during the initial cleaning and lubing of most of my Fenixes I got a greenish and gritty stuff on the rag. I wouldn't worry, I think that is standard Fenix grease.....

Once you remove it and put some flashaholic's grease on your light everything works fine.

Welcome to CPF Roy. You will find this to be a great place for advice, information, and entertainment! When I clean and lube my lights I like to start by cleaning the threads with Isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) and Q-tips (generic version). Then I use a soft toothbrush to get out any leftover grit. Wipe down with a lint free cloth and apply Nyogel 760G to the threads and O-ring. Work the threads back and forth a few times to evenly spread the Nyogel and you are ready to go! There are other ways to go about this ritual, but this seems to work well for me. If your contacts need cleaning try De-Oxit. :wave:

I have noticed this on some of my twistie lights. After I lube them with clear silicone grease and after several turns of the switch, the clear silicone grease is now greyish black. I think it is from the threads constanltly rubbing against each other resulting in tiny shavings of metal discoloring the once clear lube.

I have noticed this the least on my surefire L4 which leads me to believe: poor, cheap threading and machining leads to faster wear and tear.
