I would also like to know what the brightest 1 AA flashlight out there for around 20-40 range? And would anyone know how it compares to the Cree Elly because that is the only flashlight I have that I can really compare with.

Depends on battery type.

On regular 1xAA, the Rexlight 2.0 is the brightest I've seen, followed by the Ultrafire C3 and Fenix L1D-CE. See my review of the multi-level lights here:
Rexlight, DX X.1 & X.V, Jetbeam MkIIX & CLE, Fenix L1DCE review: RUNTIMES + BEAMSHOTS

On 14500, the DX X.1 or Jetbeam MkIIX are the most bright, about 70+ on my output scale. Haven't test the L1D-CE since 14500 is not officially supported. Output on the Rex 2.0 or C3 is a lot less. I plan to do a review of the new single output lights soon.

Oh, and the Cree Elly is at it best equivalent to the L1D-CE. I've had or moded 5 of them, and they all wound up between 70-100% of the L1D-CE initial output.

BTW, I'm talking total output above. If you mean throw, the L1D-CE wins hands down due to its smooth reflector.

The Rexlight 2.0 and Jetbeam MKIIx are very bright when used with 14500 Li-Ion cells. I couldn't believe the difference compared to NiMH cells . . .

The Jetbeam MkIIx or Dexlight X.1 (same circuit) are the brightest 1AA using 14500 that I have seen. They are about ~35% brighter than the Rexlight 2.0 or Ultrafire C3 on 14500 ... but with only a fraction of the runtime. Haven't tested the Fenix as 14500 is not officially supported.

14500s might not be officially approved for a L1D-CE but it seems that a lot of people are using them in tandem. Chevofreak's RT graphs has the L1D-CE outputting at ~1575 for 57 minutes using a protected AW 14500. Think what the L1D-CE could do if someone popped a Q4/Q5 in there!
