Don't know what kind but I know it's tough stuff. I've yet to crack open a KL1 and I have boiled and used a heat gun. If anybody knows it's a secret.

I opened my KL4 head just put the bottom half in a vise between rubber. Then used another strip of rubber and wrapped it around the upper half of the head and just grabbed the rubber strip with pliers so the strap was tight and just went to town.

It's a sealant, but I don't know makes it. I've been pretty successful putting them in a collet in the lathe, turning it slowly while running a propane torch on it. A bit after spittle sizzles, put the strap wrench to it, and twist while the rubber smokes. That much heat can distort an optic, but I've only done it to early hosts in prep for McR's.
