Another good reason to NOT go to a hospital without good backup power devices, I'd say.

Even with backup things can go wrong. I remember making a mad dash to get extension cords to the OR once. Long story short a developing machine used for xrays had a leak that nobody saw. It must have done so for months. The developing fluid must have eaten ate through the floor and eventually managed to short out a 38,000 volt line. When that line blew (as in 2 ft hole in a 2ft thick concrete wall) it managed to takeout the switching equipment that would have switched over to emergency power.

I still remember the the perfusion techs cranking the machines by hand as we brought in extension cords from working outlets. Nobody died that I know of but if they did I would have really believed in fate because the odds of what happened were pretty slim.
