Fired up my soldering iron today and did this mod.

Experiment subject Old Style KL1 UV mod.
The emitter is a 1W UV Led from Dealextreme
(Have no idea about the specs)
SS bezel was bough from a member here at CPF and is ment to be used on
Maglites/fits like a glove on the old style KL1.Not sure about waterproofness yet but it seems tight.

Will update after i have tested it in the shower...Ewwww UV in shower bad idea..aw well..

Benny, awesome mod !
Been looking for some inspiration for makin' a UV torch myself..
The good ones were really a stab in tha back !
It's time to get one now tho..

How does the optic "throw" ? Have you tried a reflector ?

Thanks for the inspiration. :)
(Great bezel too !! Any more left ?)

Thanks :)

The Stock optic throws very good, will try with a reflector when i get a hold of some that is a perfect fit.

Any suggestions?

The Bezel were sold by this guy:

No more left and im currently trying to dig up some more of these myself.

Anyone know what the current bias on the old school KL1`s are?
Looking to boost mine a bit,but sense resitors are a bit to small for my liking.

Maybe i`ll just crank a fresh converter in there.

My version using the same LED.

The LED is only running 100mA with plenty of output, I tried it at 600 and it was very bright.

Hi Benny,

I put the same UV led into a KL4 head with great results:

(It's the bottom left one)

It was a plain emitter swap without any reflector adjustments, so I would say that any reflector that is good for a Lux1 or Lux3 should be good for this UV emitter. (I did change the driver board though) The UV output overloaded my camera's sensor, so it looks like there are many rings. But in fact when viewing in person, the beam is as perfect as it can get.

Nice,

Im considering putting in one of the 700mA boards that DX sells.

Modding is FUN!

Thanks YC all I have to do is change batteries to up the current to 600mA it's running of one 17670 at the moment two 16340 and the current goes up to 640mA this light also has a two stage switch which is handy.

Benny, very nice job! I believe your KL1 is driving the emitter at 350ma but don`t bet the farm on me being right. :green: The resistors on the driver are pretty big as the pics show. No need to remove any resistors because you can piggy back one on top to raise the drive current. Much easier to piggy back solder the resistor. The link below discusses it.

Benny, sorry the link didn`t work but maybe the one below will. There are some pictures in that threaad. I could take a guess on the resistor but I would have to think about it a little. Been trying to gain some knowledge on flashlight drivers but I still have a whole lot to learn. CM might be able to help you out with what resistance you need for 500ma. :)
