I'm still learning here - do you want to do this to fit the rechargable li-on size battery in?

Out of curiosity what is the diam of a regular li-on? They are obviously different so how do some flashlights take both? Do battery contacts or springs have to be modified?

Generally, most people prefer the 18mm cell (18650 Li-ion) for its long runtime capabilities. If not, usually a 17 mm cell (17650 Li-ion) can be used, but with shorter runtime.

boring larger than 18.6mm (.734) is impractical and unnecessary IMO.

are there any cells larger in OD than the 18650?

Wouldn't recommend boring the surefire battery tubes as you will takeaway the chemkote (yellowish colour) used for minimizing corrosion to aluminium. Only option for rechargeables here is the 17670, 2xR123a, 2x17500 this with a single cell extension.

BTW what is the head? KL5? incan?

just buy a 18mm leefbody with C head and tail, easier, and that way your original tube is still intact and original should you need to send something back for repair. you can get leefbodies from lighthound
