I would like to upgrade my Surefire M2 Centurion to a Cree LED. What brands are recommended, pro's / con's, any suggestions would be helpful.

Do you need throw or spill?

IMO:

Throw w/ nice hotspot (weapons/"tactical"): Malkoff Devices P60 drop-in

Flood and general purpose: Wolf-Eyes high output 170 drop-in

Thanks for the help. I think I will try a Malkoff Devices P60 drop-in for my rifle mounted Surefire and the Wolf-Eyes high output 170 drop-in for my Surefire M2 which I keep on my tac vest for room searches, etc... If anyone else has any other suggestions I'm open to anything. Thanks again!

I came across two different Cree lamps on Pacific Tactical Solutions for my Surefire M2. The first is D26 Cree P4 LED 3.7 - 6V *High Output. The second lamp is D26 Cree P4 LED 3.7 - 13V *High Output. Both are rated to 170 lumens! Which lamp will work with my M2. I am unsure which voltage will work and which one would be too much. Please help!!!

The First one with work only if you are using two CR123 primarys (non rechargable) batteries because they are 3V each, or a 17670 rechargeable.

The second one will work with both the Primarys and with the rechargeable Li-Ion batteries like the RCR123a (Li-ion CR123a's at 3.7V each) and the 17670's (width by length in mm's, bascially the size of two CR123a's, 3.7V single)

My Surefire M2 is powered by 2 CR123 lithium batteries. So I guess I'm not totally sure what the difference between the two different lamps are!?! I apologize but you may have to put it into layman's terms for me or scribble it out in crayon. Most of this is all new to me!

RCR123/17670 are rechargeable Li-Ion 123 batteries, RCR123 is the same size as a SF CR123 a 17670 is a single cell the size of 2 SF CR123 battery. You need to be very careful which voltage you get, some of the RCR123's are 3.7 some ar 3.0 if your gonna use with a LED drop in I recommend 17670's 3.7 volts the size of 2 SF batteries.

depusm12,

Thanks for the battery info. I use Surefire CR123 lithiums only for my M2. No rechargeables. Which voltage of lamp will work?

most of them are from 3.7-9.0v and with 2 batteries your at 6.0v so most all of them will work. I am not sure of your reason for using primaries but rcr123's work just as well as long as you take care of them.

you can go with one 17670 (same size as 2x123's) or rcr123's like ultrafire or AW's. the AW's are the best and the ultrafires are the cheapies, you can buy direct from AW in the marketplace or find both of them at lighthound. just remember a 17670 is only 3.7v and the rcr123's are 3.7v each and some drop-ins fall out of regulation at 3.7v so i would suggest getting the rcr123's. you will need more voltage to get max output from the malkoff drop-in.

So you think going with a rechargeables is better than the CR123's!?! And if I decided to just stick with the CR123's do you think I would be getting the full potential of the malkoff drop-in?

Hi there,

With the SF M2 bezel, spill is somewhat limited due to the reflector seating very deep in the bezel. on a C2 bezel the spill availability in much more improved as the reflector is further near to the window.

Malkoff drop ins are having great reviews and it can be made to use with 2xR123a rechargeables. Aprt from this there are many others available in the market and they come is crees or ssc leds which are also having different outputs and beam profiles..So one needs to be certain to which drop ins is most suitable.......
