Folks,
Your help would be much appreciated. I've been tinkering with basic ROP hotwires for some time, but AW's multiple level driver has arrived and I would appreciate your advice. For some reason I find the world of bi-pin bulbs intimidating. My CPF search has revealed a lot of experimentation, but not a lot of summary/comparrisons. Luxluthor's comparison is excellent, but doesn't fit the 2xC form factor that I am shooting for.
Would someone please recommend which bulb and reflectors I should use to get maximum performance out of my 2xC Mag with 2 of AW's protected Li-Ions? Is one of the 5761 or 1111 bulbs mentioned by AW the best? If so, what are the differences between them? Is there another bulb that will work better with the lower levels of the driver (i.e. not get too yellow)?
Also, is there a ready-made tailcap that contains a charging port? I don't want to have to mess with magnets, and my new WE Shark (sweet) has turned me on to the ability to charge the light without removing the batteries. What voltage plug-in charger would be appropriate for 2 cells?
Finally, please recommend an appropriate reflector. I prefer a LOP reflector for my ROP hotwires because I really notice discrepancies in the beam when the lights get this bright.
Thank you in advance for your help. -SMC

A few thoughts...

I tried the 5761 and the Philips 7388 with my AW driver. The 5761 is awesome on high, and a bit yellow on the lower settings.

The 7388 is a 20w bulb. Output is lower an all levels, but whiter on the lower ones. Run time will be 50% better than the 5761.

I have some 1111's which are reportedly a good compromise, but I am still waiting on the poit office to deliver my updated driver from AW.

I like the MOP reflectors to eliminate artifacts, but just got a couple of Medium Stipple from litho123 to try - more even beam, less defined hot spot.

Not sure of any tailcap charging options ready made at this time.

"Run time will be 50% better than the 5761."

What is the runtime of the 5761 on the AW C cells?

What is the runtime of the 5761 on the AW C cells?

The C cells are rated at 3300 mAH - call it 3 AH useful. The 5761 draws around 5.5 Amps.

3/5.5 = .55 hrs = 32 minutes (approx, YMMV).

The 5761 is rated as a 30w bulb at 6 volts, the 7388 a 20w bulb at 6v, hence my comment about 50% longer run time.

There are no tailcap charger than I can think of, but Fivemega and Northern Lights have created in-jack chargers for the C-cell Mags. If you are willing to spend the money on FM's or willing to do-it-yourself with Northern Lights' solution.

The WE Shark looks really cool and I'm hoping to buy one in the future.

As far as chargers go, I would recommend buying an RC Li-Poly charger (can do Li-Ion) because of their high-current charging. AW's 3,000mAh cells hold a lot of energy and you need a charger than can supply that energy FAST!

I decided to buy this because I believe this is the best sub-$100 charger with a power supply. It allows 1-5 cell options and 5 different current charging options. The only downside I see with this is that you can only use the charging jack if you decided to do Fivemega's or Northern Lights' ideas. If not, you have to solder on alligator clips and deal with magnets (which you prefer not to use).

As far as reflectors go, you can get whatever Mag reflectors are available, but the 5761 needs a 10.5mm (.413") hole because of it's bigger dimensions. Fivemega has you covered with his VLOP reflector.

Other reflectors like the MOP BSBG recommend will require a little work if you plan to use the 5761.

Hope this helps. Choice is yours!

BTW, the 5761 really is yellow on the two lower modes.

All,

Thanks for your help with this. There is so much info on incan hotwires here on CPF that I was overwhelmed. This narrows it down quite a bit for me.

Much appreciated,
Shawn
