Fortunately my daughter is way too young to ever see this amazing treehouse and bug me to build one. Of course, that's because she just turned 1.

Data, simply wow. You don't do anything halfway, do you? Looking forward to seeing the rope bridge, gondola, elevator entry way thing.

I'm hoping to see a suspension bridge from the main house deck to the treehouse deck! And of course, spiral staircase from the treehouse deck to the ground. And a cobblestoned little road from the base of the spiral staircase to the sidewalks for the main house itself, complete with cute little street sign at the intersection. Yellow bricks optional.

Nice! I haven't seen this thread in a while. LOVE IT! Last time I looked at the thread, I was in our old house...the new place has some trees that could support such a project....hmmmmmmmm....besides my laziness, lack of attention to detail, knowledge of construction, trees, or woodworking....I'm ready to start!

Well, if those are the qualifiers, I'm ready too!

This is the CAD model of the stairs. Notice the 6" square 6061 square aluminum extrusion with 1/2" wall sections. They are joined together with 1/2" SS bolts and hold the 2" oak treads.

all but 4 of the sections

Daryl, being the awesome guy that you are, you should build something more innovative...like... um

    Cool Dave!

I don't doubt that you have done your homework here but I wonder if the alloy of stainless is any consideration in regards to the health of the tree? A number of months back, I implanted a small tree with a relatively large titanium object that passes completely through it and the tree has recovered well by all appearances.

Good luck finding information on the best SS alloy for use inside a Tulip Poplar tree. I looked long and hard.

The 304 SS 2" bars I used have caused no stress to the tree that I can observe except for the very slight weeping around the wounds during the first year. I keep a close eye on it.

Now, if you happen to have any extra 2" titanium 6/4 bars laying around . . .

Good job trees are so forgiving to a degree
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have
    their shoes.

Dave- As cool as the eco-sphere is, I like the idea of being attached to the tree, especially where there are munchkins involved... outstanding, and obviously very well thought out!

I am going to be around most of this weekend working on the treehouse. Bring your car, I still have not seen it.

Got the aluminum bolted together and one of the four holes drilled. I had to make an 18" extension for the drill. I am pretty sure that I have the biggest drill on CPF.

    I'm speechless... well almost

Your kids are some of the luckiest around. I can only imagine how cool it would be to have that treehouse to play in when I was young, hell I want to play in it now

What about the skylight with different shaped inserts so you can use the Databank like the batsignal

    Awsome work Dave

    Dave,
Your tree house project truly is inspirational and it's a breath of fresh air!

I only got one hole drilled yesterday and just put the steel bar in place (~10" in) before we called it a night and went in.

We came out this morning to start work again today and I looked at the 2" steel bar right as it exits the tree and noticed it was wet around the bar like somebody had sprayed it with a mister. There was no water on the bark below the hole. I reached down to touch it and DAM, the bar was cold right there. (I would say the outside air temp this morning was 75 or so but it had rained last night and was very humid out). So I touched the end of the bar and it is a normal 75. The SS304 bar was only damp from the bark to about 2" out from the bark. The rest of the bar was dry. So this enormous tree is sucking lots of water out of the ground and pumping it up to the top canopy and in doing so it is cooling the bar inside the tree to like about 50 degrees!! The Tulip Poplar trees here in PA are just finished blooming their flowers/fruit and the squirrels are eating it up. Just standing under this tree is like standing out on a day where a drop of rain hits you every 30 seconds or so. Except it is not rain, it is dropping nectar. My tractor was only there just last night and it is covered almost every inch in nectar.

We only had three of the four holes to drill today and we did get done but the last hole had a surprise for us! The drill was at about 9" in on the last hole and I felt it hit something kind of hard. It did not stop this massive drill but I noticed it was not going any further so I pulled it out and the corner of the carbide flute was knocked off! Dam, last inch of the last hole, of the last time I may ever use this drill and it gets chipped. What could that be a nail in the tree 9" in ?? so I look in there with Bon's flashlight and what do I see . . . !!!!! WOW. A lead bullet setting loose in the hole. . . 9" in, how long ago was that ??? It looks like a small caliper rifle bullet, all lead.

    Pictures to come.

    Cheers
    Dave

I can't believe it but the structure for the stairs is nearly complete. We will get out the wood tomorrow if the weather is good.
