Do you have one of these?
The Cree is only sitting on a small circuit board without any heat sink.
Remove the Cree from the circuit board, remove the excess length from the
switch pins and AA to a TO9 transistor heat sink.
I haven't resoldered the leads yet, just waiting for the AA to set. I know it's
not a huge heat sink, but it would have to work better than the original set up.
I have it all back together now, I did have to drill new the holes
for the leads as the old leads are under the heat sink,
but there is plenty of room, 2 seconds with a 1mm drill bit.
