Looks like a tailcap lanyard ring on an E2 to me.

The little Brinkmann Legend 1-AAA light uses something very similar to allow for a lanyard. It's a spring steel(?) ring that fits between the body and tailcap, and has a place to clip a lanyard or affix a split ring to.
