How do you make Gif\'s?

What is the easiest way to make your own gif's. What I'm looking for is a way to make gif's from pictures (jpegs, etc.) and very short videos clips. I'm not sure where to start so I figured I would start here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

First you need a bunch of images. To get these from a movie, you can use VirtualDub. Then you have to convert the images to GIF format. To do this you can use IrfanView. Then you have to convert the gif's to one animated gif. To do this you can use UnFreez. All these programs are freeware, and pretty highly rated.
