Sunlight in a mason jar.

The most basic concept of what all of us here are obsessed with. An effect that could be achieved with lightning bugs in a jar. Of course we always want something better and brighter. But here, a designer of interior decorations has captured the most fundamental aspect of our desires...wonder what the runtime and lumens are rated at...

Artistic yes. But pretty much the same thing as a solar lawn light.

But it's in a fancy mason jar with amber LEDs.

This reminds me of something which i read in our Encyclopedia,
way back when i was a boy . . . .


It mentioned that an early Lighting Device
was made by natives who would take a hollow gourd,
poke a buncha' small holes in it,
and then fill it with Fireflies / Lightning Bugs.

Claimed that this crude device (their words, not mine)
emitted a dim glow in the total darkness.


You would not believe how many times i've thought about that over the years !


(or perhaps you would, being fellow Flashaholics)



Often keep that in mind, when i'm tempted to call a flashlight "useless".


Both run-time and throw were, at best, rather dismal.

Maybe use a yellow bottle for a 'warmer' light . Or fill with juice.

Very cool. I really like the fact that they let you replace the rechargeable AA battery. Being a flashaholic, I wonder if you can replace the led for something more efficient or make it run longer. This is one of the few times where you don't really need it to be brighter. It'd make a nice night light.

I have both the jar and the bulb, they are cool.

It's called a "Glow Brick", ThinkGeek has them.

I'd be interested in seeing the top of the jar. Seem like a nice DIY project if I can find a nice round solar panel. Round so it can provide max power to the battery.

I wonder what the runtime is for the store bought version.

Imagine a jar with a blob of tritium in the middle. It'd glow for a couple of decades.

The jar glows for 6-8 hours, depending on how much it charged during the day. I'll take a pic of the top in a bit.

The Glowbrick isn't as bright in real life, but in a dark room it is cool to see. (I have the blue one)

The square thingie is an on/off switch, the round one a light sensitive cell.

B@rt, I had not given into the possibility or thought that your love for gadgets extend beyond the lighter section....
EDIT: well I suppose the Pepper would be a qualifying exception
