If the image is hotlinked, then it needs to go away right now (please click here and read the CPF rules on posting images).... however, if you have uploaded the image to your own hosting site, then there shouldn't be an issue.

I was thinking in terms of copywrite, respecting that the photographer had given permission to that host to have the image, not to my host. Whatever makes the most sense to the most people... Thanks 3rd shift, I've adjusted the link.

Is hotlinking okay when its an image (with appropriate link) of a product that my linking to might help generate additional sales?

It has a lot to do with the extra bandwidth involved at someone's expense.
As long as it's on bandwidth that is in your name, ie www.photobucket.com or somewhere else you registered, you should be A-OK. :)
