I believe it will operate the light but the voltage is much lower and the output will be lower as a result. Actually the P3D had a minimum input voltage of 4.5 volts, and on second thought even a fully charged li-ion may not operate the light.

isn't the voltage 3.6?
isn't that enough to get the full lumens.
actually i just realized 180 is the rating for the p2d so it would probably be the same but with more runtime.
ok, so what rechargeables do i use to get 200 lumens.
i hate the danger factor.
i think i'd rather stick with aa's
should i?

You should be able to use a pair of protected RCR123's with no problem in a P3D. These rechargeables are the same size as primary 123 lithiums, but are safer than unprotected cells. Runtime will be less than with primaries, though.
