Thrower in addition to Fenix L2D Rebel

Hello!
I have a Fenix L2D and i'm very happy with that light, but sometimes i could have a lamp with more throw (for geocaching at night ;) ).
Some features that the additional light should bring:

I have searched a bit and found following lights:
Ultrafire WF-606A, WF-600 3W Cree and WF-800 3W Cree.

I have chosen dealextreme, because i live in germany and they don't have shipping cost. And i don't have the illusion to get a brand light for the money i want to spend.

From my point of view the pro of the 606 is that it uses AAs, but its probably not such a good thrower.
The pro of WF-600/800 are that they will probably be better thrower, but then i have to buy additional rechargeables and a new charger... that sure would blow my budget... :sigh:

Can someone say if it pays off to buy a new rechargeable battery type (and fitting charger)?
Or does somebody know other lights?
I really would love the WF-600 if it would not use 18650s...

Thats a lot!

The WF600/800 will definitely be your best throwers of the bunch. If you don't want to spring for 18650 and a charger, there's always the DX Projection Cree. It uses the same body as WF-600, but has a multipower circuit so it can handle CR123A (if you can get those cheaply enough). See my comparison review of the lights here:
DBS, MRV, Tiablo A8, DX Cree Projection, WF-600: RUNTIMES and detailed pics!

Hey nick! You mentioned the WF-600...it comes in both a 18650-only battery option or a bigger voltage range 3.6-9v model, as well. That model accepts 123 batteries. I'm not sure whether you're open to the 123 battery option, but it seems like many of the throwers out there are either using 123s or 18650s. Does anyone out there know of a real thrower that uses AAs?

I've read what another forum member Rizki_P (who owns both) had to say. Apparently the multi-voltage model does not have near the battery life as the 18650-only model. Using two CR123 batteries is about the same brightness as the other using the one 18650.

Could you afford a cheapo charger and batteries from DX? I don't own these, but they have decent reviews: the DSD charger for $6.64 and two protected Ultrafire 18650 batteries for $9.92.

I am not sure if it would be right for your use or in your price range, but I've also heard that the Lumapower D-mini has pretty powerful throw for being a small, single 123 battery light. DX is selling a shady origin yet real one here for $45.

Sorry I don't own any of these things to comment on my actual experience, but I've been looking to get something similar as well. So I figured I'd pass along a bit of research I've done. Good luck!

Thanks a lot so far!
How does the WF-606 beat against the WF-600?
The 606 would be the only light for which i don't need to buy new batteries...

Is the throw of the WF-600 better than the throw of the fenix?
(You recognize i'm clueless...)

The WF-600 or the slightly dimmer 3W Cree projection should easily out throw both the Fenix and the WF-606. The WF-606 might only have a bit more throw then the Fenix.

The WF-600 with charger and 2 18650 batteries at DX costs $45 USD total.

Don't have the 606, so can't offer an opinion there.

The WF-600 will throw at least twice as far as L2D, roughly speaking. My L2D Rebel R100 throws ~3750 lux@1m, and my WF-600 on 18650 throws ~16,300 lux@1m. But since light decays by an inverse square law, that means the relative "throw" of the WF-600 is about twice that of the L2D (i.e. the squareroot of 16,300 is 128, and the sqrt of 3750 is 61, so relative difference in how far it throws is 128 vs 61).

Hope that helps ...

Ok thank you!
A it seems that there is no thrower using only AA batteries, i think i will go for the WF-600 with 18650er batteries. It uses one at a time, right?
I think i'll get those 18650ers and this charger.
Now that the light uses only one of the two 18650ers, i would like to have an case for the other one... but there's no case for that type, right?
All together i will cost ~47$ (thats ~33€ in europe) including plug adaptor.
Again, thank you guys!
Until next time...
