What would you recommend as a good L2 substitute that's cheaper?

I'd prefer 2xAA instead of 123 for gifts to the un-enlightened. :)

I have a Fenix L2T (v1) and have been very disappointed - rotating the head to change levels shows almost no difference between low and high. Might as well not have two levels on mine.

The L2T v2 seems better, but I haven't used one.

I just put the head of my L1T v2.0 Rebel on a 2-cell Fenix body, which is equivalent to the L2T v2.0 since the heads are the same. The ceiling bounce output on high is about 3-4x the output on low. So yes, there is a significant difference between the levels for this version.

Though I don't own one, the L2T v2 seems like a huge improvement over the v1, which a friend of mine has. His has the same problem as yours, and sometimes only one mode works at all. The improved output/runtime as well as the new switch are what I like about the v2. Except for beam pattern, calling it a cheaper AA alternative to the L2 is spot on.
