Possible Orb Raw mod?

I own an old luxeon 3 version of this light, would it be possible to put in a Cree q5 or something similar?

No. The star will raise the emitter too far. You may also have problems with the reflector, as the CREE is focused differently than the Luxeon. The opening is also a different diameter.

You may consider using a Seoul LED. It is closer to a Luxeon LED, and requires just a little work to get your stock reflector to work. If you do a search for SEOUL MOD, you will find plenty of info to get you started.

Basically, you need to raise the emitter 0.030" using a copper shim. It needs to be isolated from the circuit ground, or in the very least, the LED needs to be isolated. The reflector needs to have the corresponding 0.030" removed from the back of it. The led is adhered in place with thermal epoxy (as is the copper shim), and centered in the reflector before it dries. When the thermal epoxy has set, solder the leads in place and fire it up.
