i dont mean to hijack my own thread but how long will three sets run off a power pack with a 20 ah lead acid battery. each string draws 0.04 amps,,,4.8 watts, i might just use the 100 watt inverter running off the cig lighter like i did last year, just curious as to what the runtime would be

Factoring in a 75% efficiency on an inverter runtime should be:

1 strand 37 hours
2 strand 18 hours
3 strand 12 hours
4 strand 9 hours
5 strand 4 hours

well the battery specs that i quoted are from the contained unit see here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000157TP8/?tag=cpf0b6-20, now the battery in my truck has more capacity, and a 100 watt inverter in my cig plug I will be using 3 strands, just out of curiousity, if the strands run 60 Htz, i know some do, will that have any effect?

No, the average wattage over a 1 second period is still 4.8 watts. If you don't already have the inverter get the smallest one you can the bigger the inverter the larger the current it draws even if your only drawing .5amps If you can find a 25 watt inverter get that.
