Efficiency of the average 24 watt HID ballast?

I have a wolf eyes boxer 24 watt flashlight and was wondering how efficient the ballast is. Assuming you ran a 24 watt HID light with a seperate power supply providing current to the ballast, and the 3 on board 18650 batteries were only used to provide the arc, how much additional run time over the standard 1 hour would one expect?

Just curious as to how much extra run time HID lights will have in the near future because of improved ballast designs.

You answered your own question. If the batteries last 1 hour and they are 2600 mAh 18650s, then that's roughly 83% efficiency.

Most of todays ballasts have an efficiency of close to 90% and even over..

10% is a small prize to pay for exellent regulation to the bulb.

The biggest total efficiency-loss is caused by the bulb-reflector setup: With about 65% bulb-lumens to torch-lumens, there is the place to be if you want improve total torch-efficiency!
