Which readily available led for a gift?

I would like to get my 17 year old son one or two general use flashlights of his own so he will stop borrowing mine. I would like something along the line of the G2 in terms of size and material (would rather not have metal bodied stuff). Maybe a two or three AA type. AAA might be ok. C or D cells not ok.

They can't be a G2, pro poly, or aviator. Want something different than my stuff.

Bright color is a bonus.

Need this for Christmas which is only about 5 days away so I assume that I'll have to get something from a local retailer, lowes, hd, walmart, target, other sporting goods type stores.

Pretty hard to beat a Fenix L1P version 2. It's a single AA with great brightness, 3 levels of output, easy to carry size and great price. Check Lighthound.com as he ships so fast it will make your head spin and you should still have plenty of time to get it there this week.

Are Cr123s ok? If so, that opens up your options. If not the for AA maybe an L1D or L2D.

What is your price range?

Dorcy has a 120 Lumen LED light at Sears...they just went down to $35...or try one of the 1-Watt Garrity's? Or the Lowes 3-Watt w/ rubber handle?

^The K2 one right? they are probably 60 lumen out the front at most and I've heard quality is crap^

I think a Fenix L2D-CE would be great as a gift, or the Lumapower LM31.

I can't find it on their website, but I have seen 1 and 3 watt versions in the store. 2 AAs and probably a Luxeon III. Could be better, could be worse. I think it was $25. BUT it's aluminum. Target has one with a camo finish.

I really can't think of many good plastic flashlights I have seen in stores.

I just bought my dad one of the T series Inovas for about $45 at my local Sports Chalet. As I recall it put out about 100 lumens.

Tektite makes fantastic plastic lights. I have several of them. But might be too hard for a kid to twist.

My pick would be a Pal Light. It's rubber, very small, bright LED, high+low+strobe+glow, clicky that's easy to use, and runs seemingly forever on a 9v battery.

Word on the street is they will have DS Nichia next month.

There's another Pal Light called the Safe Light that comes in blue. I'm not sure what the differance is, but I think it has the same features and costs less. Also comes with a clip and magnet holder.

edit: ah I see the difference now....the survival has long throw and the safe light has a broad flood beam. I think the flood beam is better personally. Plenty of people , including me, turn the lens backwards on the survival model to make it floody and to protect the lens.
