It looks like a big flashlight — but it's really a nonlethal weapon designed to make you sick.

Intelligent Optical Systems, Inc., of Torrance, Calif., has been granted a contract by the Department of Homeland Security to develop what it calls the "LED Incapacitator," according to a DHS online newsletter.

The handheld device using light-emitting diodes to emit super-bright pulses of light at rapidly changing wavelengths, causing disorientation, nausea and even vomiting in whomever it's pointed at.

I think they just installed one of these in San Francisco on Fremont Street where it goes underneath the Transbay Terminal. Big panels of rapid color changing LEDs up at the top of the pillars on either side. I think they all go red when the stoplight is red, too, but could be coincidence.

I'm watching for the advertising, something like:

Don't Barf in your Car, Take The Bus Instead.

There's also a huge LED billboard now on the Oakland side of the Bay Bridge approach, incredibly bright, far "brighter than real life", flickering like crazy all the time as it changes images like a giant television set. Eeewghly.

Coming soon to every billboard you can see everywhere, if they can get the laws changed in their favor.

Talk about crowd control technology waiting to happen ....
